Exploring Hartola is best done on foot, through its winding trails and scenic village paths. Whether you’re wandering through pine woods or fruit orchards, the village walks and birding trails offer a close look at local flora and fauna. Quaint slate-roofed homes and traditional wooden doorways line the way, often accompanied by cheerful village dogs who may join your walk.
One rewarding hike leads to the ancient Shiva-Durga temple perched on the village’s highest hill. The climb takes about 25–30 minutes. For the adventurous, a jungle route begins just before the village entrance—steep, unmarked in places, passing an old watchtower (avoid climbing it). The alternative trail begins from the main road, moving through orchards and past a smaller temple.
The temple rewards you with panoramic views of the Kumaon Himalayas—Nanda Devi, Trishul, Nandaghunti, Panchachuli, and more shining crystal-clear on a good day. Another trail descends to a smaller village 2.5 km away and continues towards a tributary of the Kosi River—beautiful but best explored with a guide due to wildlife.
Back at DevShakti, end your day with a BBQ—fresh mushrooms, paneer, or local veggies, or opt for chicken or mutton skewers—prepared with love and care by our in-house team.
